Oldest shipwreck discovered in the Black Sea

In the Black Sea an ancient shipwreck has been discovered, which has been there around 2400 years, around the fifth century B.C., a time when Greeks were frequently trading between the Mediterranean and their colonies along the Black Sea coast.

The Black Sea Archaeology Project is a three year project that searches ancient ship wrecks with a Remote Operated Vehicle . They have found more than 60 ships in the Black Sea the last three years, but never this old and historic.

The ship is 75 foot long, found more than a mile below the surface and is originally Greek. Archaeologists think it’s a merchant vessel which are similar to the vessels on ancient Greek vases. The lack of oxygen in the Black Sea has preserved the ship almost perfectly.
