World Maritime Day

World Maritime Day

Today we celebrate World Maritime Day! It is created by the UN through IMO (International Maritime Organization) to give recognition to the maritime industry. IMO is a specialized UN agency that develops and maintains a comprehensive regulatory framework for shipping. It focuses on areas such as safety, environmental concerns, legal matter, technical co-operation, maritime security and the efficiency of shipping.

It’s an opportunity to take stock and look back, but also to look forward, addressing the current and future challenges for maritime transport to maintain a continued and strengthened contribution towards sustainable growth for all.

It was first held in 1978 to mark the 20th anniversary of the IMO Convention’s entry into force and is always held during the last week of September. Many organizations worldwide are encouraged to organize events and activities to celebrate this day.

The theme this year is: “IMO 70: Our Heritage – Better Shipping for a Better Future

The theme for 2019 has already been picked: “Empowering women in the maritime community”
